Metal Church brought another high energy and exemplary performance to Rochester, New York last Thursday (September 15th). Opposed to having the great Chris Caffery fill in on guitar like the last time they were in town, this time around we were able to see the official Metal Church lineup consisting of Mike Howe, Jeff Plate, Kurdt Vanderhoof, Rick Van Zandt and Steve Unger.
As anticipated, they brought a ton of energy to the stage and performed a myriad of songs from their catalog- including a few from their latest record XI. They performed “Beyond the Black” from their first record, “Start the Fire”, “Date With Poverty”, “Fake Healer” and more to round out their 13 song set. From XI they played “Killing Your Time”, “Reset” and “No Tomorrow” which gave those who have not heard the new record a healthy serving of what the record has to offer as well as satisfied the needs of the those who are familiar with and love XI. Of course the infamous “Watch the Children Pray” was performed and was a definite hit among the crowd- you could hear the audience sing the chorus loud and clear throughout the venue more so than any other song performed.
Metal Church is another band that has a very ‘brotherhood-esque’ presence on stage- you can tell that everyone is happy to be there and genuinely enjoys being on stage together. Mike Howe brings an incredible presence to the stage; his somewhat eerie vocals mixed with non-stop movement and overall personality on stage creates an entertaining performance for the crowd. An excellent guitar solo was performed by Rick Van Zandt which had the audience fully engaged. And, it goes without saying that the rest of the band delivers in full; Jeff Plate is a total powerhouse, Kurdt Vanderhoof still shreds on guitar and Steve Unger is superb on bass. All aspects of each band member come together to create a truly unique and high energy performance, definitely one you don’t want to miss.
