Sharkey’s in Liverpool, NY kicked off the week with a bang by bringing L.A. Guns to the summer stage. Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis have rejoined forces to take the band on a tour around the United States leading up to the release of their forthcoming album The Missing Peace, set for release October 6th under Frontiers Records. Rounding out the rhythm section and joining Tracii and Phil are guitarist Michael Grant, bassist Johnny Martin and drummer Shane Fitzgibbon.
Opening the performance was a blazing rendition of “No Mercy” off the bands self titled 1988 release. The set consisted of some of the bands greatest hits; “Electric Gypsy”, “Kiss My Love Goodbye”, “Never Enough” and more, including a track off their upcoming album titled “Speed”. The chemistry created between Tracii and Phil seems to be at an all time high- in fact, the onstage chemistry between all members appeared to be genuine and apparent. Phil Lewis is an all-star front man, having the utmost energy while on stage and even venturing off into the crowd during “Ballad of Jayne” to let audience members take a shot at singing the chorus. Alongside Lewis, whose voice hasn’t aged a minute, is Tracii Guns who is playing better than ever and displayed his musical prowess throughout the entirety of the show, and even more so by playing with a violin bow early on in the set. The rest of the band’s talents were up to par and showcased, with Grant performing a couple solos featuring both guitar work and vocals.
I am sure I’m not the only one hoping that this reunion lasts, and that we see Tracii and Phil back on the road with Michael, Shane and Johnny sooner than later. However, there are still quite a few dates remaining in the coming month or two where you’ll have the opportunity to see what I’m beginning to think is one of the most underrated bands of the 80’s.
